Women on the Supreme Court

Ten women have served as judges of the Supreme Court of Ireland. The first woman appointed to the Supreme Court was Mrs Justice Susan Denham in 1992, having been called to the Bar in 1971, appointed a Senior Counsel in 1987 and appointed a judge of the High Court in 1991. Mrs. Justice Denham was appointed Chief Justice of Ireland in July 2011; the first woman to have held that role. Since then, nine women have been appointed to the Supreme Court:

  • Ms Justice Fidelma Macken (2005-2012)
  • Ms Justice Mary Laffoy (2013-2017)
  • Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne (2013-to date)
  • Ms Justice Iseult O’Malley (2015-to date)
  • Ms Justice Mary Finlay Geoghegan (2017-2019) 
  • Ms Justice Mary Irvine (2019-2020, President of the High Court, 2020- 2022) 
  • Ms Justice Marie Baker (2019-2024)
  • Ms Justice Aileen Donnelly (2023-to date)
