Forensic Sleep Symposium in London

On Saturday 29 March, Mr Justice Charleton participated in a conference titled ‘Forensic Sleep Medicine: Neurological and Legal Challenges’, which took place at The Royal Society of Medicine in London. The conference, which was organised by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, was led by Dr Neil Munro, Consultant Neurologist and Sleep Physician.
Mr Justice Charleton chaired two of the day’s five sessions. The first session he chaired (titled ‘the evidence’) featured contributions on ‘forensic guidelines on evaluative reporting: heuristic and analytic approaches’ and ‘does the polysomnogram have a role?’. The second session (on ‘the law’) included remarks on the ‘practical challenges defending sleep-related automatisms’ and ‘where are we going with parasomnias: policy and the law – a defence, mitigation or just an excuse?’.
