Bilateral meeting with UK Supreme Court

On Friday 1 November, the Supreme Court of Ireland was pleased to welcome members of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom to Dublin for a bilateral meeting.

The UK delegation included:

  • The Right Honorable Lord Reed of Allermuir, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom,
  • The Right Honorable Lord Hodge, Deputy President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom,
  • The Right Honorable Lord Briggs of Westbourne, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom,
  • The Right Honorable Lord Stephens of Creevyloughgare, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom,
  • The Right Honorable The Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales,
  • The Right Honorable Dame Siobhan Keegan, Lady Chief Justice of Northern Ireland, and
  • The Right Honorable Lord Carloway, Lord President of the Court of Session in Scotland.

Following a series of working sessions held at Farmleigh House and Estate on topics of mutual interest to both courts, the delegation concluded their visit at The Honorable Society of King’s Inns, where Lord Hodge was made an honorary bencher. Lord Justice Jackson and Lady Justice King, both judges of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales, and Professor Gerry Whyte also dined for the first time as honorary benchers.

Bilateral meetings between the Supreme Court of Ireland and the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom are valuable formal opportunities for discussion and knowledge-sharing between the neighbouring jurisdictions and occur on a biennial basis.
