Comhrá with Scoil Chaitríona

Today, 15 November, the Supreme Court held its second 'Comhrá' of the Michaelmas term with Scoil Chaitríona in Glasnevin, Dublin.

Comhrá (the word for ‘conversation’ in Irish) is an education initiative of the Supreme Court that enables secondary school students to participate in live question-and-answer sessions with judges of the Supreme Court from anywhere in Ireland by video call.

The programme provides students with an opportunity to ask judges questions about their work, the role of the Supreme Court and of the courts system more generally within our democracy, allowing them to gain an insight and understanding of the function of the Supreme Court and promote an interest in law.

Scoil Chaitríona educates its student through the Irish language. Accordingly, today’s call, which involved a lively discussion between Mr Justice Peter Charleton, Mr Justice Gerard Hogan and a mix of 4th and 5th year students, also took place through Irish. Students asked the judges about the decision-making process in the Supreme Court and what happens if the judges don’t agree, their thoughts on what the greatest challenges facing the legal system today are, and about how the courts system could be made more accessible to citizens.
