Joint meeting of the Network of Presidents and the CJEU

On 28 March, the Chief Justice participated in a bilateral meeting between the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union and the Court of Justice of the European Union which took place in Luxembourg.

The Chief Justice delivered an introductory presentation on behalf of the Network of Presidents on the topic of ‘The Independence of the Judiciary within the European Union: a Shared Responsibility’.  The focus of the presentation and the discussion that followed was the impact of jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union on national courts of EU Member States. “GDPR supervision of judicial processing of personal data” was the second topic discussed at the working sessions.

The meeting was part of a tradition of meetings between the CJEU and the Network of Presidents, which is an organisation made up of Presidents of Supreme Courts in EU Member States. The Network is a forum through which the Presidents can discuss issues of common interest, and through which European institutions can request the opinions of national Supreme Courts.

Chief Justice O’Donnell is a Vice-President of the Network.
