First Comhrá call of the new term
Today (21 October), the Supreme Court held it’s first Comhrá call of the Michaelmas term.
Comhrá (the word for ‘conversation’ in Irish) is an education initiative of the Supreme Court that enables secondary school students to participate in live question-and-answer sessions with judges of the Supreme Court from anywhere in Ireland by video call.
The programme provides students with an opportunity to ask judges questions about their work, the role of the Supreme Court and of the courts system more generally within our democracy, allowing them to gain an insight and understanding of the function of the Supreme Court and promote an interest in law.
Monday’s call involved an engaging discussion between Mr Justice Seamus Woulfe and Ms Justice Aileen Donnelly and students of Loreto Community School in Milford, Co. Donegal. Students asked considered and insightful questions on topics such as the selection process for judges in Ireland, how judges go about making decisions, how we can increase diversity within the legal profession and judiciary, and what aspects of the role the judges find most challenging and most rewarding.
